This wine is a conundrum - lychees, rose petals and honeysuckle on the nose but just when your brain decides this is a sweet wine along comes the zing of candied ginger to counteract the floral intentions with a dry finale. Wonderful.
Montagny 1er Cru 2003, Cave de Buxy Burgundy, France £ 23
Stuffed full of hazelnut and gun-flint flavours, the vineyards that produce this wine lie on the Southern most tip of the Cote Chalonnaise. Ample sunshine and cool evenings lend it a finesse that is heartened by the buttery tones of the Chardonnay. Works well with or without food.
Pouilly Fume, Pacal Jolivet, Loire Valley, France £23
This is a bone dry white, made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape. The vines are grown on chalky clay soil with a touch of limestone which gives this wine its distinctive gun-smoke quality of flavour. Far more elegant than Sancerre and with the benefit of several years aging has only improved the dynamics of this wine. The grower and wine maker Pascal Jolivet is rated always in the top five producers.

Lagar de Cevera Rias Biaxas 2003, Spain £ 25.50
Think white peaches and ripe apricots, made from the low yielding Albarinio grape, this is becoming more popular by the moment. It has a quality of finesse that can accompany food without dominating what is on the plate. Immensely enjoyable and well worth a try.

Passetout Grain Taupenot-Merme 2001/03 Cotes de Nuits, France £ 20
Made from a melange of Pinot Noir and Gamay this elegant red is produced from the family Estate of the Taupenot-Merme. Silky-smooth with cherry and strawberry like tendencies this is medium bodied wine with a chic finish. True in its simplicity and understated in its refinement.
Moreson Pinotage Coastal Region 2004, South Africa £ 21.50
This grape is actually a cross of two varietals, Pinot Noir and Cinsault and was first developed in 1925. The true home for this grape is considered to be South Africa - inky deep in colour with ultra creamy rich fruit gently supported by good tannins. A wine to be considered, not rushed.
Jordan Estate Merlot 2004, Stellenbosch, South Africa £ 21.50
Velvety rich in depth, lazily rich in plum tones and red berry fruits interlaced with spicy oak, this magnificent Merlot is testament to the wine maker Gary Jordan who has lavished all his skill and know-how into it.
PinotNoir Overstone 2006(N Z) £24
Considered the ‘Holy Grail’ of winemaking by many producers, this is a wine that requires infinite patience and attention to detail to achieve the quality levels it is capable of. Overstone Pinot Noir is based on ripe cherry flavours with layers of spice and game complexity filling the palate.
Museum Real Reserve 2001, Cigales, Spain £ 24
Drive 3 hours south of Rioja and you will come to Castill Leon, Cigales - more precisely the Valle del Pisuerga. This is where the vines grow, some as old as 80yrs, and the vineyard consists of pebbles and not much else, so the grapes produced are limited in quantity but sublime in their quality. Tinta del Pias is hand picked and sorted, the fermentation and maturation takes place in French oak barrels for a minimum of two years. It is then allowed to mature in the bottle for another two years before being sold. All this time and effort is to be enjoyed in every silky rich glassful. Enjoy.
Tommasi Valpolicella Ripasso 2003, Veneto, Italy £ 25
The vintage is indicative of the fat hot summer of 2003. The grapes were so ripe and packed full of dark velvety textures. This wine is so deep and mysterious. A stunning combination of Morello cherries and chocolate.
Carmenere Reserve Vina Von Siebenthal, 2005, Chile £27
A miniscule amount of Cabernet Sauvignon - so small it’s not worth mentioning on the label - is added to this wine in order to assist the acidity and structure on the palate. As a result the Carmenere’s rich smooth character is augmented by a most attractive hint of cassis and cedar wood, just to add even greater complexity the wine is then matured in French and American 225 oak barrique before being bottled and sold. A chewable Chilean.
Cotes de Beaune Village Edward Cornu 2004, Burgundy, France £ 30
The Pinot wines of the Beaune are always going to be finer if not lighter in all their characteristics than the wines made in the the Cotes de Nuit and this fresh softly spoken wine is just what it should be. Soft, fresh and fruity.
Le Chemin de Moscu 2004, Lanquedoc, France £33
A stunning Syrah/Grenache wine so called the Road of Moscow because in the revolutionary time of the French History all the villagers would walk this track among the vineyards to gather under an ancient tree to discuss matters of great import. The seriousness of the thoughts of the workers has imparted itself into the grapes produced in the locale… deep, dangerously dark with a quiet forceful power in colour, texture and taste.
La Croix Chaigneau LaLande de Pomerol 2000, France £ 33
The vineyards in Lalande de Pomerol are low lying with a healthy constitution of sand and gravel for its soil. This allows the vines to produce affable round fat Merlots, wines that are rich without being demanding. Wonderfully approachable because of the soft tannins it is a good accompaniment to most foods.
Chateuauneuf du Pape-Domaine Jean Deydier et Fils, Rhône Valley £39.90
Slightly spicy, light in colour but deep in flavour, succulent and mellow in the finish. M.Deydier produces the reds from very bold vines Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre with low yields leading to the concentrated and complex flavours, richness and ripeness characteristic of this wine.
Amicus Reserve Shiraz 2002, Australia £ 45
Amicus …meaning friend ….the wine maker just couldn’t believe his luck with this vintage, making it his true friend! The grapes were sweetly ripe…the fermentation went according to plan and the wine that luxuriated in the oak barrels for once behaved itself. The wine is dense in colour, complex in flavours, sweet in its ripeness and warm in its alcoholic content.
Brovia Ca’Mia Barolo 2000, Piemonte, Italy £ 85
The Brovia family only make just a little over 50,000 bottles shared between ten different styles off wine. Sisters Elena and Christina only make wine grown on their land in the Piemonte region of North West Italy. Complex rich currants, truffles, balsamic and violets are held in check by fine ripe tannins. This unbelievable wine should be decanted at least forty minutes before you begin to enjoy.

Made from late picked botrytised Semillon grapes and blended with a little Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. Deliciously sweet and honeyed with aromas of candied orange and pineapple, this is a very good less expensive alternative to Sauternes and Barsac.
Noble One Semillon Botrytis 1998 Australia 37.5cl £ 30
Deep golden caramel tones, rich sticky serious honey with a double cream depth of viscosity. You could almost spread this on bread.
Tokaji Disznoko 1998 5 Putts Hungary 50cl £ 60
This outstanding wine owes its character to the three extremely rich grapes, Furmint, Sarga Muskotaly and Harslevelu that have been affected by ‘Noble Rot’. A complex process of concentrating the juice and oxidising ensues over time. The more blending of the ‘puttonys’ the higher the level. This divine wine has had five puttony combined; the highest level achievable is six puttony.
